Portobello Mushroom Steaks
These portobello mushroom steaks are juicy, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. Marinated in balsamic, garlic, and olive oil, they soak up rich umami flavors before being broiled to perfection. A hearty, plant-based alternative perfect for pairing with salads, grains, or roasted vegetables.
Chef’s Tip
Ingredients
- 4 portobello mushrooms
- 5 cloves garlic, pressed
- 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- 1 pinch freshly ground pepper
- 1 pinch chili flakes
Directions
- Wash the tops of the mushrooms and remove the stems.
- In a small bowl, mix the garlic, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and chili flakes.
- Divide the marinade equally among the mushrooms, pouring it into the gills.
- Allow the mushrooms to marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight, keeping them upright to prevent spills.
- Preheat the oven to broil.
- Line a baking sheet with foil and place the mushrooms gill-side up.
- Broil for 7 minutes, checking at the 10-minute mark to ensure they are tender throughout.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with a sprinkle of sea salt and a drizzle of olive oil before serving.
Chef’s Tip
For a smoky, charred flavor, grill the mushrooms instead of broiling them. If you want extra depth, add a splash of honey or smoked paprika to the marinade.
